日本の小学校や中学校、高等学校などで外国語教育をサポートする外国人の英語教師、ALT（外国語指導助手）。伊予市でもALTの先生たちが英語の発音や出身国の文化などを生徒たちに教えています。

今回は、フィリピン出身の Carl Sotomil（カール・ソトミル）先生のおすすめをご紹介します。

Hello everyone, I’m Carl. I am the Assistant Language Teacher for the Nakayama Area in Iyoshi. Although technically I represent Canada as an ALT, I never lost my Filipino roots. During my time in the Philippines, I was amazed with the different kinds of plants and trees I can see there. When I came to Japan, I saw the many beautiful flowering plants and trees here, and I fell in love with the beautiful autumn leaves, or kouyo.

皆様、こんにちは。中山地区の外国語指導助手（ALT）をしております、カールと申します。ALTとしてはカナダを代表しておりますが、フィリピンのルーツも大切にしています。フィリピンにいた頃は、多種多様な植物や木々に感動しました。日本に来てからは、美しい花々や木々、特に美しい紅葉に魅了されています。

Today, I’d like to share with you my favourite area in the city! 

本日は、私が愛してやまない中山地区の場所をご紹介したいと思います。

I’d like to introduce you to Nakayama Flower House, an arboretum located just south of Nakayama’s main town. I graduated with a degree in Landscape Architecture and City Planning, so I occasionally go to Flower House to appreciate plants and flowers. I am glad that this is very close to where I live and I am just able to walk there after work or when I am free.

中山の中心街のすぐ南に位置する植物園、「なかやまフラワーハウス」をご紹介します。私はランドスケープアーキテクチャーと都市計画を専攻していたので、時折フラワーハウスを訪れて植物や花を鑑賞しています。自宅から非常に近く、仕事帰りや自由な時間に気軽に立ち寄れるのが嬉しいです。

The Nakayama Flower House is located inside Kurinosato Park. To access Nakayama Flower House from the town, first you need to climb a set of stairs near Koyomi Space to the top of the hill. On the way to the flower house, you will see a very long slide. I have tried the slide many times and I am always impressed with the speed of it.

なかやまフラワーハウスは、栗の里公園の中にあります。町からなかやまフラワーハウスへ行くには、まず「こよみスペース」近くの階段を上り、丘の頂上を目指します。フラワーハウスへ向かう途中には、非常に長い滑り台が見えます。私はこの滑り台を何度も試しましたが、そのスピードにはいつも驚かされます。

Once you reach the top of the hill, you would be able to see the Nakayama Flower House. Head towards it and you’ll immediately find yourself at the entrance. Outside, you can already see some plants that they are selling. I found an ornamental pincushion flower at the entrance. I’d love to purchase this flower one day! You can also feel the heat inside the greenhouse. Usually, it is maintained at around 30 degrees so they are able to grow plants unavailable from Japan, such as palms, bananas and papayas.

丘の頂上に着くと、なかやまフラワーハウスが見えてきます。そこへ向かうと、すぐにエントランスに到着します。屋外では、すでに販売されている植物を見ることができます。入り口で鑑賞用のマツムシソウを見つけました。いつかこの花を購入したいと思っています。温室の中では熱気を感じることができます。通常、内部は約30度に保たれており、ヤシ、バナナ、パパイヤなど、日本では育たない植物も栽培されています。

Once inside the building, you immediately find yourself in the store, where they sell a variety of unique plants such as cactuses, flowers like roses and tulips; and small trees. They also sell a variety of locally made pots perfect for any plant size. Additionally, I also found soil and decor for your little garden at home. It’s great for people that are not growing plants, but growing insects as well! The soil is rich in nutrients, making it attractive for people taking care of beetles. 

建物の中に入るとすぐに店舗があり、サボテン、バラやチューリップなどの花、小さな木など、様々な珍しい植物が販売されています。また、あらゆる植物のサイズに合わせた地元産の鉢も豊富に取り揃えられています。さらに自宅の小さな庭用の土や装飾品も見つけました。これは植物を育てるだけでなく、昆虫を育てている方にも最適です。土は栄養が豊富で、カブトムシを飼育している方にも魅力的でしょう。

Once you are past the store, you can explore their greenhouse and see the many plants they are growing. Inside the greenhouse you can see plants that are usually not found in Japan like bananas, star fruits and papayas. I especially got fixated on a papaya plant located close to the access to the second floor. I haven’t seen a papaya fruit in a while so it was a surprise that they grow them there. I just wish they’d be able to sell the papaya for me so I can use it for tinola, a famous dish from the Philippines.

店舗を過ぎると、温室を探索でき、多くの植物が栽培されている様子を見ることができます。温室内では、バナナ、スターフルーツ、パパイヤなど、日本では通常見られない植物を見ることができます。特に、2階へのアクセスに近い場所にあるパパイヤの木に目を奪われました。しばらくパパイヤの実を見ていなかったので、ここで栽培されていることに驚きました。もし販売されているのなら、フィリピンの有名な料理である「ティノラ」に使えるのに、と思いました。

Nakayama Flower House is also great for events! Last September, the Nakayama Chestnut Festival was held next to the Flower House. There was a small concert located inside the venue. There was also ample room to gather around the second floor and it’s a great place to rest on a rainy day.

なかやまフラワーハウスはイベントにも最適です。昨年9月には、フラワーハウスの隣で「なかやま栗まつり」が開催されました。会場内では小さなコンサートも開かれました。2階には集まるのに十分なスペースがあり、雨の日の休憩場所としても素晴らしいです。
